Hellenistic Greek Sculpture

Over time I began to think of sculpture in terms of artistic anatomy and poetic impact.
As I worked I would look back in history to try to understand how other sculptors dealt with these issues.
This lead me to the Greeks. It"s a common misunderstanding that the Hellenistic Greeks sculpted realistically,
the work was highly stylized in such a way as to make it almost impossible to copy. They developed the fundamental concepts of
gravity, muscle, bone and psychology.
Ever wonder where the anatomical knowledge of Micheangelo or the psychological insights of Rembrandt came from? These great artists
all drew from the realistic tradition which has its roots in Hellenistic sculpture.
This is a road not travelled by many as it requires a foundation of natural and technical skills.
To progress with my own vision of "contemporary classical" sculpture I decided, as many other sculptors have,
to become a student of them. To assist me in this adventure my research included several textbooks now all but forgotten. One in particular
is Edouard Lanteri's work "Modeling and sculpting the Human figure" (1902). This is "the" classic treatise on the techniques of figurative sculpture.
The material represents 300 years of studio lore and was helpful in filling the gaps in my classical technique. I Also give thanks to Philis Raskind a classical
sculptor steeped in Hellenistic and Renaissance traditions I can't thank her enough for her patient understanding and gentle feedback when I got it wrong.
She encouraged me through the difficult periods and her influence now shows in my work. She
is very important to me as a friend and mentor.
The figure is experiencing that subtle arrogant smile of self satisfaction, the pleasure of victory.
His figure is in contrapposto, twisted and arched back in such a way you can feel him inhale as he savors the moment. If you look closely you can see the fat pads around the
nipples and under his belly. Hips slightly forward
to show off his nude body. Some muscles are in tension some are smoothed out all together and can be seen only with direct light overhead,
the net effect is that his skin is transparent to the underlaying hills and valleys of his musculature system.
